Play Spaces

Burnaby, BC

Client: SFU Community Trust/Hughes Condon Marler Architects

In Progress - Construction

Site

A new daycare for the UniverCity neighbourhood beside the SFU campus in Burnaby.

Problem Statement

To design a landscape that is integrated with the building and provides a variety of experiences for children. The goal for the project is to provide a healthy environment for the Children and a place for children to engage with their environment and learning.

Design Solution

It was determined early in conception of this project that the building and site would be based on Living Building challenge principles. Additionally, the design is based on the concept of Reggio Emilia which based on the principles of respect, responsibility, and community. Space2place collaborated closely with the client, architect and consultants to create a design that is leading the way toward a new standard for environmental building standards.

The landscape is a key part of the learning environment and is considered integral to the design of the daycare. Nature based play is provided through interaction with topography, planting, water and malleable materials.
