Opening in the summer of 2008 this play area has been a success from day one. The design has a unique identity that resonates with both children and adults.The design was developed collaboratively with local children, parents and City of Richmond staff. This approach gave us a unique ability to create and inspire change in outdoor play spaces, resulting in a site-specific design that foster healthy development of children and provide strong connections to the natural world. Awards: 2009 CSLA National Merit Award, 2008 Design Exchange ‘Best in Category’ for Landscape Architecture.

Macrae Residence

A new dwelling constructed on a sloping site in a residential neighbourhood in West Vancouver.The site sloped up from front to back. The client requested a dwelling that was integrated into the landscape and wouldn’t be imposing at the entry.We worked with the client to set the building into the slope to take advantage of grading to reduce the scale of the house. Additionally we were able to use the grade to create intimate exterior spaces around the house.

City of North Vancouver Spirit Trail

Space2place completed a master plan for the spirit trail identifying its route through the City of North Vancouver. This was developed after a series of public workshops and a thorough site analysis of the route corridor. The result is a plan for a trail system that enhances the existing experience and connects isolated places along the Waterfront for the first time in North Vancouver. The trail through the Mosquito Creek marina is the first section built. The second segment is currently under construction along the Park Street right of way and through Moodyville. Awards:2009 CSLA Regional Honour Award, 2008 Design Exchange - Award of Merit.

Oppenheimer Park

This park opened in May 2010, and has quickly become a treasured place in the downtown Eastside of Vancouver. Space2place undertook a collaborative design approach involving park users, neighbouring residents, park staff and local business owners to develop an inclusive design for the redesigned park space. The result is a redesigned park space that has become the backyard and a home to many festivals and events for the residents of the DTES. Included in the redesign are a creative play space, a new Activity Building, an informal field sports area and lots of additional seating.

SFU Univercity Childcare

The Childcare facility is on track to become the first Living Building in Canada. The project is currently under construction in the UniverCity neighbourhood beside the SFU campus in Burnaby, BC. The landscape is integrated with the building and provides a variety of experiences for children. The design is based on the concept of Reggio Emilia which incorporates the principles of respect, responsibility, and community. The landscape is considered a key part of the learning environment and is integral to the design of the Childcare. Nature based play is provided through interaction with topography, planting, water and malleable materials.

This segment aired on Shaw Access. They did a nice job of framing some of the conceptual ideas and research that went into the creation of the Garden City park. We are hopeful that media coverage will help to encourage support for more innovative public spaces throughout the lower mainland.

Several recent s2p projects were honoured by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architecture Professional Awards Programme.

This year’s awards were announced February 20, 2009. The Spirit Trail planning study for the City of North Vancouver, BC won a 2009 Regional Honour Award.
Garden City Park Play Environment, designed for Richmond, BC won a 2009 National Merit Award.

In 2008, UBC Sustainability Street by s2p was recognized with a National Merit Award for Design by the CSLA.
