s2p Picks for Urban Landscape - Twitter List

I have been using Twitter for the last couple of years and have found it an essential resource to keep up to date on current information and events. As a new user twitter can be a bit daunting and it sometimes takes a while to “get it”. My advice is to jump right in.

It can still be difficult to find good resources or people to follow on twitter.  So I have complied a curated list of influential people and organizations with a focus on the public realm and landscapes. This is a good place to start for people interested in Landscape Architecture, the public realm and cities. These are also compiled on a twitter list at @space2place/s2p-picks-urban-landscape I will update this list as I find others with something to say.

Also if you have an ipad definitely check out Flipboard (check out the demo video). It has become my preferred method to browse twitter.  You can just add a link to the list above to browse the content shared by the members of the list.

CSLA awards

It was announced today that space2place has been honoured with two CSLA awards. Garden City Play environment was recognized with a National Merit Award and the plan the for City of North Vancouver Spirit Trail was recognized with a Regional Honour Award. These awards are in addition to the Design Exchange awards we won for these projects last November.

We are excited that our work is being recognized and enjoyed by the public. We hope to continue to build on this success with more great projects.

Last year there majority of the winners were in Western Canada. It appears that this year the focus has swung back to the East. The caliber of the winning projects is very high this year and we are honoured to be considered among such a distinguished group of winning firms. Congratulations to all of the winners.

Space2place project manager Mike Teed is featured in an upcoming educational video that will introduce High School Students to Landscape Architecture. Mike presents Garden City park and explains some of the underlying ideas behind the park. Once we have more information on the release of the video we will provide an update on where to find it.

For now here is a rough cut of the production. Mike is feature at the 1 minute mark and again 5:40 minutes into the video. Perhaps Mike has discovered an alternate career path for himself....

What goes around...

It seems that there is an explosion in the number of skateparks in California. In today’s New York Times there is an article about skaters taking advantage of abandoned pools in the backyards of foreclosed homes. This seems to be a throwback to the 70’s when people couldn’t afford to fill their pools leaving thousands of them empty throughout California. As documented in the movie Dogtown and Z-boys, skaters creatively figured out a new use for the empty bowls. These were the inspiration for the first skateparks.

Movie trailer to Dogtown and Z-boys, at the halfway point it starts into the quest for backyard pools.

Back then the skaters had to drive up and down back lanes standing on the roof of cars to get a peek into yards looking for a new challenge. It is interesting to read that today things have evolved a bit to the point where they are using google earth and checking realtor websites to find a new spot. In fact the internet also provides great ways to share information behind logistics of emptying a partially filled pool as well. Once again skaters are quick to find creative uses for the landscape.

I have heard this downturn in the economy may be similar to the 1970’s. I guess this is another example of how this is becoming a reality.
